Some wear brightly coloured saris, others are in western dress. They are either desperately seeking a baby or hoping to lift themselves out of poverty and offer their own children a better life.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Beginning with a few surrogacies in 2003, Patel\u2019s Akanksha clinic in the industrial state of <a class=\"markup place-mention\" data-type=\"place-mention\" data-cid=\"c-11\" data-location-name=\"Gujarat, India\">Gujarat<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"> now delivers over 100 surrogate babies a year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maptia.com\/suzannelee\/stories\/surrogacy-in-india-the-cradle-of-the-world\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-934 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/asiajournalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/suzanne2.jpg\" alt=\"suzanne2\" width=\"1000\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asiajournalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/suzanne2.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/asiajournalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/suzanne2-300x99.jpg 300w, https:\/\/asiajournalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/suzanne2-199x66.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Commercial surrogacy remains controversial and is banned in many countries. But in, a socially conservative society, surrogacy has thrived since the supreme high-court legalised the practice in 2002. A report by the Confederation of Indian Industry estimates the practice will generate $2.3 billion a year by 2012.
