At the same time you have an interest in photography, which you really want to put to good use, but haven\u2019t had the opportunity to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">That was the scenario Frederick Jon Chen found himself in a few years ago, until he came across\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/photohoku.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Photohoku<\/a>, an unconventional project that allowed him to use his photography skills to do good for disaster-stricken communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">It turned out to be more meaningful, says Frederick, than many of the community involvement projects he\u2019s been involved in.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1290\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1290\" style=\"width: 990px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/contented.cc\/2015\/09\/photohoku-disaster-stricken-communities-singapore-tohoku-earthquake\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1290 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/asiajournalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/photohoku2.jpg\" alt=\"photohoku2\" width=\"1000\" height=\"666\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asiajournalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/photohoku2.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/asiajournalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/photohoku2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/asiajournalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/photohoku2-199x133.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1290\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Frederick Jon Chen\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">After years of volunteer work, \u201cI had become disenchanted, as it were, with my role, fundamentally,\u201d he shares. \u201cBy coating a wall of a school atop a mountain in Sa Pa with fresh paint, were we creating and imposing new expectations on our recipients which \u2013 crucially \u2013 were previously non-existent?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">In 2013, he came across Photohoku, a photo-giving movement formed in response to the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami.\u00a0\u201cUnlike photojournalists who travel to Tohoku mining relentlessly and insensitively for photo opportunities in the dismantled region, we (Photohomies) travel up to northeast Japan to make and give photos to those affected by the events of March 2011,\u201d he shares.
