Off the boat and down a wavering\u00a0buoy\u00a0line to 16m quickly, without much visual reference, is the preferred method. \u00a0Whenever we dived at the site, the whole crew was extra\u00a0vigilant.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">I had the opportunity as the vessels staff photographer, to dive the area many times over the season and to witness how significantly it can change from one day to the next. \u00a0I experienced that the ocean comes alive when the weather turns, and as night approaches and learned it was a privilege\u00a0we don&#8217;t often experience. \u00a0This provided an understanding of how delicate the balance is between our marine life and their environment. \u00a0The photographs are encounters and behaviors I witnessed at those times, when the currents were strong, the weather gloomy or after dark.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1074\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1074\" style=\"width: 990px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.grantstirton.com\/#!\/portfolio\/C0000EqR5uPwkfqA\/G0000HsWvOL0Yu_A\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1074 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/asiajournalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/poseidon.jpg\" alt=\"Grant Stirton\" width=\"1000\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asiajournalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/poseidon.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/asiajournalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/poseidon-300x100.jpg 300w, https:\/\/asiajournalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/poseidon-199x66.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1074\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Grant Stirton<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">The sobering news is that this region, like most of the ocean, is in serious peril. \u00a0It faces an\u00a0onslaught\u00a0from a number of angles &#8211; pollution, overfishing, lacking resource management, political instability.\u00a0 Conservation has become a necessity.\u00a0 In what took hundreds of hours and a season to capture, could have been seen on a single trip, just a decade ago.\u00a0 The agreed view is that our ocean&#8217;s are approaching critical condition. \u00a0Our megafauna are vanishing &#8211; sharks, rays, turtles, tuna, along with base of the food chain, the small planktonic plants and animals, that support the system as a whole. \u00a0Climate change is fostering conditions that are causing the acidity in our oceans to increase. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Although not visible, this change is so significant that entire eco-systems are affected and species are disappearing. \u00a0All the animals depicted rely directly on these planktonic creatures to survive. \u00a0This area attracts life because of the nutrient rich currents that rise from the deep and wash over it&#8217;s pinnacles. \u00a0They represent the result of a cycle, that begins with the sun, descending to the bottom and returning with life from the depths to\u00a0nourish\u00a0and sustain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">All pictures and text by Grant Stirton.
