This way, I made it in less than 30 minutes. I didn\u2019t have a choice \u2013 I was needed at the hospital.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Once at the hospital, Sharma stayed there for three days straight. \u201cI had to presume my family was safe through the tremors,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1046\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1046\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thewire.in\/2015\/06\/18\/standing-firm-on-shaky-ground\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1046 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/asiajournalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/vivek2.jpg\" alt=\"vivek2\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asiajournalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/vivek2.jpg 750w, https:\/\/asiajournalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/vivek2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/asiajournalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/vivek2-199x133.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1046\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vivek Singh<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">In the nearly one hundred hospitals across Kathmandu, as well as in countless smaller healthcare outfits dotted around the city, the earthquakes and the ensuing medical crisis brought out the best among the country\u2019s health professionals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">The Patan Hospital seemed best-prepared of all of Kathmandu\u2019s hospitals to respond to large-scale disasters. We were told that the hospital conducts mock drills every six months. \u201cThe timing, staff response, everyone was so well tuned. Everyone knew what to do, whom to look to for help, what to say and what not to,\u201d said Dr Ashish Shrestha, a senior doctor with 12 years of experience. Shrestha was on the frontlines of Patan\u2019s response. He handled many of the more than 1,000 patients who came to the hospital in the days following the disaster. There were 57 deaths at the facility.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1047\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1047\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thewire.in\/2015\/06\/18\/standing-firm-on-shaky-ground\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1047 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/asiajournalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/vivek3.jpg\" alt=\"vivek3\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asiajournalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/vivek3.jpg 750w, https:\/\/asiajournalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/vivek3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/asiajournalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/vivek3-199x133.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1047\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vivek Singh<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">A disaster triage area was set up immediately, and patients taken to different areas marked green, yellow and red, based on the severity of their injuries. The hospital was able to handle the tremendous inflow better. \u201cWe have nearly 900 staff here.
